WOLFE SWALLOWED SHOCK and tried to snatch back his composure, to stifle the pure lust pooling in his lower body, contributing swiftly to a condition where he hoped he did not have to stand up.

Mayra’s eyes flew to his face, suspicion underlying her surprise, but Wolfe imagined he looked as stunned as she did.

He had never touched a woman wearing Enhancement Rings. He’d always disliked the arrogance and affectation of other Ring-Witches.

Why had he revealed his identity to her?

His fingers shook as he covered his Ring. The scry alone had proven he needed to work with Mayra. And that would be idyllic—being near her, hungering to take her to bed, while all the while, Richart Bren hovered nearby.

But Bren had left them alone. He had conceded and left.

The Ring-Witch had also caused Aristen no small amount of concern. Aristen had told him what touching Mayra generated, and then flatly stated he wouldn’t lay a finger on her again, even for her weight in gold.

Surprised, Wolfe dryly thanked him. He didn’t particularly want his rowdy younger brother touching Mayra. He hoped to reserve that pleasure for himself someday.

Those lovely, strange eyes returned to his face as he gently touched her cheek. He abruptly noticed her hair was loosened and curled around her face and down over her shoulders. It was longer than his, thick and shining and as rare a color as her eyes.

“That was remarkably unexpected,” he said quietly, with a lop-sided smile.

Her eyes followed the intricate woodwork of the chessboard. Finally, she nodded. Perhaps she wasn’t ready to discuss their mutual attraction.

“Marten and I felt the pain of the dragons, as well as whispering nearby,” she said unsteadily. She gave Wolfe a shaky smile. “And I have a feeling you have also felt them in some way.”

“I heard, and felt something.” He shook his head, perplexed. “How can I describe something that’s there, yet not? It’s hard to believe they were dragons, of all things. You haven’t told Leisher anything?”

His eyes flicked to Marten, visible between two of the shelves. The apprentice was still out of earshot, but often glanced their way. “Nor anyone else?”

“I’ve told Leisher some things, in bits and pieces. I wanted to find out what I could about the dragons...” She trailed off and shook her head. “Anything I could tell him so I wouldn’t sound mad.”

“I’m not sure there’s a way to do that,” Wolfe said dryly. “I think we might be able to contact them. But we need privacy.”

“For a meeting of the” —she paused— “minds?” Her slow smile lit Wolfe up yet again, sending fire through his body. He definitely should not stand up yet.

Wolfe watched Mayra as she rose and made her way back to the table where they had sat earlier. Despite her shapeless clothes, if a man really looked, which he was, he could catch glimpses of a small bottom, round breasts, and a small, lithe waist. And legs that seemed just long enough to wrap themselves around his waist.
